With its wide coastline, France is a country of fishermen. Bretons, Boulonnais, Marseillais, Sétois… Fishing communities are numerous and deeply rooted in French culture and history. Fishing has provided for entire regions, built on a traditional and seemingly immutable economy. The profession passed on from father to son, and the fish resource appeared infinite. But post-war technological progress shook the old order and the fragile stability of this artisanal and family-based activity. Today, the fishing profession has reached an impasse. Fishermen, ecologists, scientists and politicians can’t find common ground. This documentary recounts those seventy years of turmoil in order to better understand the situation fishermen face today.
