In 1994, they were “killed”.
Today, the Rutonde survivors still live on their hill in Eastern Rwanda. These women say, jokingly: “Death did not want us”. They are the last survivors of their families, have been violated to their core, and yet are still standing proud, beautiful, dignified and strong. Since the events, the young girls have become women and the mothers, grandmothers. Guided by a Franco-Rwandan psychologist, they have slowly come back to everyday life. Twenty years after the genocide, these women have become the keystone of their country’s reconstruction. The Rutonde survivors invest financially in their community, as well as through cultural and political activity. They also personally help educate new generations.
The simple hill that fosters these women’s struggle is now the universal stage of a film about resiliency and the need for forgiveness.
