Henri-Georges Clouzot, director of The Wages of Fear (Palme d’or at Cannes Film Festival 1953), Diabolique, and many other masterpieces, was a master of suspense. He was seen in his time as the “French Hitchcock”, and has influenced such major contemporary filmmakers as William Friedkin or Steven Spielberg. He was an authentic author with a singular outlook on the world, and one of the few directors who managed to blend traditional French filmmaking with the American culture of spectacular entertainment.
By examining his romantic life and his work, we discover an elusive and inventive man. To portray Henri-Georges Clouzot is to portray a visionary, an agitator, an artist against the system.
